What is clipping?

Clipping refers to the method of separating objects from their background in a photograph. Image editing programs (e.g. Adobe Photoshop) include certain tools to cut out people, products, or items from a picture. These photo clippings can then be transferred to a plain white background. Online shops, in particular, use this method for presenting their products.

There are several different methods of image clipping, depending on the complexity and given condition of the picture. A clipping path is used to cut out objects with straight or round outlines, and represents the most frequent and professional method. The image editor retraces the objects manually and pixel-precise to create a vector path that separates them from their surroundings. In order to make this vector path as precise as possible, the image editor has recourse to the Bézier curve and additional tools. The result is optimal and pixel-precise clipping of the image; and the extracted object can be placed on a different background without any problems. Automatized programs, or the Magic Wand tool often do not provide a clean clipping of the object’s edging.

Creating a vector path, however, is not sufficient for filigree objects, such as hair (clipping people), products with fur or fringes, and animals with long fur. The details of the image are too tenuous to be captured properly. The editor has to work on a more detailed clipping of the object and its surroundings, while the edges of the object require a fluent passage. In order to clip hair or fur, the editor uses masking on alpha channel level to capture even the subtlest details. Read more about this in the chapter masking.

Benefits of image clipping

Clipping offers two major advantages. First, there is the removal of interfering surroundings or shadows to emphasize the product itself. Second, there is the possibility to insert the object harmoniously into a montage with different backgrounds.

Image clipping is especially relevant for product presentation in online shops or catalogues. The customer has a better perception of the clipped image on a plain (white) background, because the product is shown to its best advantage. The potential buyer is not distracted by interfering surroundings and receives a better notion of the product. Thus, professionally clipped pictures provide a consistent product presentation alongside a clear and simple high quality image.

Corporate websites make use of clipped pictures of their employees to create a uniform, and, thus, more professional appearance.

At the same time, clipping allows pictures to be used in montages or composing. The objects integrate into new color backgrounds and pictorial worlds without visible passage. Image Clipping allows stitching these objects with other pictures, while arranging them on top of, or next to each other to create a harmonious and smooth overall picture. This becomes especially relevant for the creation of advertising material, such as flyers or banners. Moreover, the option of taking a picture once and simply being able to insert it into different surroundings is cost-effective.
